Dictionary.com’s Word of the Day for February 1, 2021 was diegetic which was defined as “happening within or being the created world of a story.” In the Sister Circle Writer’s Retreat, Dr. Annette challenged us to do just that. The retreat focused on the importance of telling our narratives. “What is your story?” Dr Annette asked us. And as many others do, she reminded us that if we do not tell our stories, they will be lost. Dr. Annette focused us on creating the world of our story. We each started with a memory that we wanted to share. Under Dr. Annette’s guidance we fleshed that memory into a compelling story that pulled in the reader’s attention. We were asked about the sights, the smells, the sounds – all of the things that give life to an event and turn it from a few words to a living, breathing thing that take root in the reader’s imagination and blossoms. An additional tool introduced during the retreat was yoga. Every week we spent time learning and practicing poses that help open the creative flow. As someone who dabbles in writing, it was good to explore the fundamentals and the tools that make the words on the paper into a story. If you are looking for an opportunity to improve your writing game, I highly recommend Dr. Annette’s retreats.
